Founded in 1819, the city of Memphis was built on a bluff next to the Mississippi River. Named after the ancient capital of Egypt, Memphis became the largest city in Tennessee. Its proximity to the Mississippi river, coupled with its flood-resistant topography, made it the South's recognized transportation hub during the 19th century.
Renowned for its musical roots, Memphis is fondly known as the birthplace of Elvis and the location of Graceland and Beale Street. Also the home of B. B. King and other renowned musicians, including Johnny Cash, Booker T. Jones, Jerry Lee Lewis, W. C. Handy, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Al Green, Isaac Hayes and many others, Memphis hosts the annual International Blues Awards and is the home of the Blues Foundation.
Long known as the city of Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination, Memphis is also the location of the Mason Temple, where Dr. King gave his famous "I've Been to the Mountaintop" sermon, and the "Poor People's March, led by Coretta Scott King, the day before his funeral. Today, Memphis is the home of the National Civil Rights Museum.
